It seems a few of us in here want to talk GPS and off road mapping so let's do it here.
Off Road GPS Navigation

I use Ozi Explorer on a fairly basic Android tablet an 8" Samsung Galaxy Tab A. My issue with Apple is the general lack of a GPS as standard and Ozi won't run on Apple software anyway. There is a program called Avenza which will run on both Android and Apple.
For mapping, you can't go past the free online maps for all of Australia and down to 1:25K resolution from Get Lost Free Maps
I've also done a whole series of tutorials using Ozi Explorer for our 4WD club but they are available to anyone by checking them out on our YouTube channel.

Gumb my model is a SM- T350. Is your tablet the same model ?
I will watch the Youtube info thanks for that it would appear to be exactly what i was after.
What mount are you using in the car ?
-
yes, same tablet so Ozi will run no problems. It's only $32 for the Android version without the Australia map which you don't need anyway.
Download the trial version for free, play around with that and then pay for the full version later. Des, the developer, is very good at sending activation codes the same day when you go through the purchase process.
It's so much better than the Hema X1 and is half the price even if you need to buy a tablet and program.

My tablet sits on the ledge covering the basic info display in the Pajero but not all cars have that option. It's just stck on with velcro tape so it's easy to remove and put back as required.
What is important in a mount is that it shouldn't wobble around and I've seen that problem in those floor mount type with the long arm. We managed to cable tie the arm on a mate's car to stop that but it's not the best solution.

So watching the tutorial do you have to have it on a PC as well ? Or can you just use it from the tablet.
I.e using waypoints etc…
Total noob here apologies for all the questions.
-
I have it on the PC as well which is a higher cost and that's what's on the first video. Later videos (2&3) go in to the use on the tablet. The 2 versions have different menus and available icons etc.
The PC version is needed if you want to plot tracks and then use those plots on the tablet as a navigation aid. Once I've done that track or whole trip, I transfer a copy of tyhat back to the PC for later use. They are much more detailed in the number of track points and obviously 100% accurate.
-
Ah ok. I am watching number 3 at the moment.
So if I was going across the Simpson Desert and wanted to do some different tracks on the way over. I would need to have the tracks loaded on the PC when I planned my trip and then transfer it to the tablet so that I can just follow the arrow and directions so to speak.
-
Not really. You could just use Ozi on the tablet as a navigation aid showing you all the tracks in far better details than Hema for example. That is unless you pay the outrageous Hema yearly subscription to get the same detail you can get for free from Get lost. So you have Ozi running on the screen, the arrow showing where you are and the tracks ahead so you can easily just follow that. Ozi will record the track you are on, show you GPS speed, and you can put in waypoints for planned stops or other marker points. You'd be able to see on the tablet how far from those points you are.
The PC version just gives you easier ability to have the same map on the screen and plot the planned route as in video 1. That track can then be transferred to the tablet and you could just follow the line in a similar way that you would do with a Navman for exmaple which would do turn by turn navigation.
There's a trial version of the PC Ozi program you can download and play with as well. you can then decide if you want to buy that too for $140. If you do a lot of travelling, it's well worth it. I don't use the car GPS anymore, it's crap and Google maps is useless other than main roads and city driving. Try that in our high country and you'll be lost forever.

Whole my videos are all about how to use the options on both versions and cover initial begginer use to more advanced stuff, this guy did a video showing him using Ozi on his tablet in the car. the map he has is the Hema 150K Australia map which I used in video 1 but there are much better options around now.

Looks like just what i need. Thankyou.
Does Ozi work like a navman or do i need to down load Google earth style maps for that ?
-
It needs maps to be added, unlike Google earth but it means that with a built-in map, you only need a GPS signal to make it work, just like a Navman etc.
Just download the trial version and have a play in the car. I can send you a map to add in if you like. You can call me on mobile if you like, just PM me for the number.
or you can download the getlost map for Australian here:

It's about 5GB.
