Petrol BBQ

  • Unleaded petrol as stove fuel 😳 Not for me. Carrying a separate container of petrol isn’t a good idea, particularly around remote communities.

  • I have 2 two burner stoves, 1 single burner and 2 camping lights that I run off unleaded and love them.

  • I'd never heard of such a thing. I reluctantly use gas, unleaded for cooking is just not for me.

  • My old Coleman camp stoves used what we called White gas or Kerosene. Is that the same as what you refer to as petrol? Ask some one here what petrol is and the will probably say unleaded gas depending on how smart they are!

  • They are talking about what you call unleaded gas to fuel a car. Kero would be fine but petrol (or gasoline) is way to flammable for my liking.

  • Where I came across this was in a Tom Clancy Jack Ryan book. The Chinese and Russian armies where using petrol stoves to cook their food in Siberia when they were deployed in the field.

  • Never heard of it. Just wondering how they regulate the flow of petrol to the fire so it doesn't all go up at once.

  • This one can run on petrol, liquid alcohol and Diesel. I guess if you're in the bush and run out of petrol or diesel you could try some spirits?

  • G’day

Going nuts ….can’t find my Optimus 8r anywhere. I’ve had one for about 10years now. Would have loved one of these as a young Boy Scout but had to wait till later in life to get one. Great for bush walking. Boils a cuppa in a no time flat. Unless you were walking for days you don’t need anymore fuel than what’s in the tank.

I keep it for when I travel in the Ute. No need to unpack much for a simple cuppa when stopping for a quik break

    Regards CD

  • A Jet Boil does the job for a cuppa in no time flat too. No way would i evenb consider one of these. They are an accident waiting to happen.

  • Gumb been using them for 30 years and no issues and my original still runs like a dream.

I have a Jetboil which is great for a cuppa and I have the French press attachment for it. Works a treat when we go camping. Wife doesn’t drink coffee so we use the Jetboil to do 1 lot of water for her cup of tea and then another lot for my coffee. We have 600ml Yeti cups which keep the heat in perfectly whilst we are driving.

    Enjoy your "Q"

That may be so but there are idiots around and they are the ones who go boom. I just don't think they are a good option.

  • I am still a little confused as to nomenclature. The 8r says white gas, which here equals Kerosene. It is what I used in my Colemans and it is a whole lot safer then unleaded gas. I had a can of it catch on fire once and I though it was gonna explode and it did not!

  • G’day

Invented in the 1870s and used by soldiers around the world though 2 world wars. Copied by the Russians and the Chinese. Simple and robust. If they develop a hole they just don’t work. And like a car fuel tank they don’t explode except in the movies.

  • It's the carrying of petrol and the refilling part which can go wrong.
