What is too much tech in BBQ?

  • Once upon a time if your bbq came with a temperature gauge it was classified as hi tech.

I was having a look at FireBoard 2 thermometer today.

Bbq used to be a place you could go, well at least for ten seconds to get some peace from the connected world. No longer.

Just got my latest electricity bill. Having a bit of a rant about anything that uses electricity.

  • Yeah Hearing you 12 x 7, I'm not looking forward to my next power bill that's for sure.....i'm expecting a shocker. I'm thinking Pellet Cookers have become a bit too hi-tech and you're using 2 x power sources, electricity for the thermostat, the auger, fan, then you have the pellets.

That's why I like either charcoal or Gas. Gas is probably the only ongoing commodity that I don't mind using.

  • I really don't understand these types of frustrations. As far as I'm concerned, the more options the better. Last I checked nobody was being forced to use more advanced systems.

It's not like traditional methods are disappearing or anything like that.

For the last 2 or 3 months I've almost exclusively bbqued on my zero tech fire pit. Thank goodness for the matador looftlighter clone though. It makes getting the fire ready and smokeless so much faster.

And when I want to smoke foods the pellet BBQ is still the most convenient.

  • An analogy is the millennial anti thief device some modern cars have

If you don’t use the skill you lose it.

New users only know how to use their Q with the gadgets.

Why learn all the vent positions when the computer does all the work?

Ask them to use the Q without the gadgets and you get a blank look.

  • New users only know how to use their Q with the gadgets

Maybe, but that doesn't affect us. And we don't know if that's true in the long run. Someone that uses the fireboard item in your first post is going to know a hell of a lot about temperature and protein management.

Compare that to the dry chunks of meat served off hotplate BBQs in the 80s. Progress is good, but obviously to each their own. I couldn't be arsed using the fireboard graph way of cooking and would much prefer to just play with a fire pit or go by feel and make more mistakes. I can understand the appeal though and where there's a market you'll find products.

  • Hey Bro!

    Why aren't you bbqing?

The Q checked into the bushfire website and it decided it shouldn't turn on because there's a fire ban in Austria!

    Austria???

Happened after the last update. It screwed up the settings and the geo code.

What happened to the brisket you were planning to cook?

The Q did a cholesterol check when I put the meat in and decided I should use a plant based brisket instead for my health. The Q automatically ordered the plant based brisket from Coles and incinerated the meat brisket so I couldn't eat it.

How do you like your new Tesla? It is absolutely awesome. As well as self drive it has the new autocook bbq option installed. It has the best of both worlds. The car drives to the camping spot on auto pilot and at the same time cooks a great bbq meal!

  • I prefer technique over technology anyday....If I want to BBQ, I don't have the trust in electronics to go off to work while a Brisket is smoking away, or go away for the day....even if it's a slow cooker...what if it fuses...up goes your house.

When you are as time poor as I am using tech is the ONLY way I can bbq at times. Sitting there nursing the offset / kettle / even the komado is not an option on a weekend with all the kids sport I have.
