Cooking steak on a big rock

  • There was a restaurant over here a few years back where you had a heated rock put on your table and you cooked your meat on the rock. Might as well use a frying pan, over coals is much better.

  • I'd like to try it. Sounds interesting. I've had a slab of salt intended to be used in the same way. Should get to it one of these days.

  • There is a couple clubs / restaurants here that do stone grill lunch - taste great, and you can’t complain if it’s not cooked to you liking

You pay just about the same as to have a chef cook it 🤷‍♂️

I had one of those hot rock steaks years ago. It's just a gimmick. Can't get a sear on the steak. The steak sticks so every time it does sear it gets peeled off when you go to flip it. then eventually you've used all the surface of the rock so while the steak is cooking it's just going grey. Great for a bit of fun but if you like a paying for a proper cooked steak just get a normal one.

  • G’day

Way back in the last century when I was a Boy Scout we were told not to use rocks around a fire, they could be soaked inside with moisture and explode when heated. I saw proof of that at a hungi in Melbourne when the rocks were being moved into the pit and exploded. Cooked with a lot of different things but draw the line at hot rocks.

  • I wouldn't mind the "cook your own steak" gimmick if it was cheaper, but if anything it's more expensive. If I'm paying $90/kg for supermarket grade steak I at least expect the chef to cook it for me.

  • Yeah I think that was $45 cook your own or 52

    Chef cooked ,

Bit Expensive but a novelty- and it was a bloody nice steak !!
