Making charcoal in the wood fired oven

  • G’day

I’ve collected and used the remaining charcoal from the wood fired oven. Seeing what happens if I seal the oven off early with an insulated door. I’ll have to be patient though it’s a big mass of firebrick and insulated so it will take days to cool.

    Hears hoping

Sorry for the late reply. Appears my door has leaked a lot of air and I’ve made more ash than charcoal. Guess it’s back to the drawing board. And I might resort to the old trick of sealing the door edges with rolled up wet newspaper.

Not a complete loss. I had enough to give the acorn junior a fill and enough small stuff to put on the gardens as a soil improver and moisture retainer.

Yes it has a chimney. It’s external to the oven entrance itself. Once the entrance is sealed the oven is sealed. My door leaks air that’s obvious to the amount of ash.

I’ll sort that out. Like I said some wet rolled newspaper is the old Italian trick to seal the door. I’ll rebuild the door and go from there. I’ve had this oven since 2011 it’s not used ever day but I still use it most winters.
