Found out today that steel wool is a great fire starter.
Survivalists use it to start a fire when they don’t have matches or a normal lighter.
Who would have thought steel could be flammable.

classic, not sure about you, I'm not even a smoker but when im camping I'm more likely to be carrying a lighter than steel wool!

Like welding what your dealing with is molten steel. I’d be respectful of that and wear a pair of leather gloves at least. Might be tempted Not to wear thongs either.

I often carry Glycerin and Condys Crystals (for purifying water and first aid etc)
The two mixed together make a fantastic fire starter even on wet wood.
I haven't tried the steel wool yet - but I am led to believe it needs a catalyst (flint spark or 9v battery)
The lint from your clothes dryer, mixed with Vaseline, makes great little firestarter balls. And they work even if they get wet.

Does it also work with belly button lint?

If you're able to collect that much belly button lint, you have other problems besides trying to start a fire!

My other used to soak her used tea bags in kero and use those as fire starters.
