My poor Weber doesn't get much use anymore because of the Akorn.
One day I'll need to decide if I want a ceramic kamado.

It is a pretty common story from Kamado owners who were previously Weber Kettle or gas bbq owners.
Once they got pass the initial learning curve the Kamado becomes the main bbq.
If your bottom vent isn't leaking I would give it a month before you mess with it.
When it was really smoking up some came out the air inlet, but nothing from around the bottom vent seals.
Yeah the inlet will gunk up with a few cooks.
I still haven't done anything to mine. I know it must seal up enough because I have no troubles snuffing out the fire. I just got to get use to only needing the bottom vent open a crack

Hi
Agree. Certainly took me a while to get used to cooking with the top vent. On the Webers I never touch the top vent, it is just fully open all the time as I put the thermometer in there. I am getting used to the top vent cooking on the Akorn, with the bottom vent open just a smidge. An yes, it seems gunk sorts out all evils with time.

eeep.
The high heat cooks might have had something to do with it, but at the bottom of the firebox there is a a metal guide that helps the bottom piece connect to the main body.
And mine has completely snapped off, and it looks like a combination of rust and heat.
The good news is that it appears to be pretty unnecessary anyway.
Yeah, I'd say that's more a safety feature in case you don't clamp it on properly or to help you unclamp it and remove it without as much risk of dropping it and spilling ash/hot coals everywhere.
Yeah, and personally I think I would deserve to burn my house down if I did something silly like unclamp it when the coals weren't completely extinguished.
Hi
It is great there are still forum entries on the trusty Akorn - given that so many of us bought them.
Keep them coming. How did we improve them? How did we keep them going? How food we overcome problems?
I love mine. A little temperamental, but it has character. Not completely set and forget. That is why I like Webers - you have to drive them. I think the offset guys like "driving" their machinery.

are you still using your Weber, Grant?
Hi
Most certainly. I use the kettle for grilling and low and slow bits like chickens. I also cold smoke in it. I use the Weber Magnum for briskets and pork shoulders. I use the Weber Go Anywhere for skewer type stuff. I tend to use the Akorn also for low and slow, for pizza and for stuff like Tritip. I also use the Weber with a thing on top for rotisserie.
The Weber Q for breakfast and some of those rolled chicken roasts and for steaks with the grillgrates in.
Just need a Cyprus grill and I am set.

Hi
UG - did the nuts for the back of those thermometers you have for the Akorn's ever turn up? I have had enough of the one that came with it. It now gets all cloudy behind the glass.

Yep, the nuts came in Thursday.
Cool. Next time I am down I will come and get a thermometer and some more charcoal.

I may or may not have seen a pallet of freshly packed Akorns come through the back dock on Monday
Now to play the waiting game for another price blunder
Even without the crazy discount though the Akorn is a great bit of kit and worth considering for those looking for an entry level kamado/bbq
